Tobacco Retailer Licensing: California Voters 2018

In July 2018, the American Lung Association’s Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing commissioned a survey of over 800 California voters, including an oversample of voters from rural communities, to gauge their level of support for tobacco retailer licensing ordinances and other policies in the tobacco retail environment. Results show that California voters support tobacco retailer policies and understand their potential to protect our youth.

  • 74% Support requiring store owners to get a license to sell cigarettes and other tobacco products
  • 71% Support a law prohibiting any business located within 1,000 feet of a school from selling tobacco products
  • 78% think a good reason to restrict tobacco retailers near schools is that this law will reduce illegal sales to minors
  • 72% think a good reason to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco is that it can reduce youth smoking
